I am not an academic or a scholar. This narrative of biographies and histories is fascinating and very interesting. I do not pretend to know or recognize the names of all the characters; some names which are confusing to a untrained North American reader. None-the-less, a littlebit of effort enabled me to "catch-on" and all the stories were entertaining. This is best read with a Kindle reader or app so that some names, historical references can be looked up while reading.
I digested the material bit by bit. It could also be read like a novel.

The translation of Plutarch's biographies is readable and fine enough. It is the e-book presentation that gives difficulties. A table of contents would be most useufull as there is no easy way to negotiate the content from biography to giography. Similarly, finding the notes for any given biography or going back to refer to them is a challenge in this edition. At the price, however, complaining seems asking perhaps too much.

Excellent review.
I'm a big fan of Greek and Roman history, despite that I sometimes get names confused. Plutarch's Lives is a great collection and comparison between 23 pairs of Greek and Roman individuals. It's not so much of history as a telling of individuals and the time that they lived in. I liked them for the fact that I got to not only read about individuals I had never heard of, but got to understand their character.
For academics, this translation is the Aubrey Stewart and George Long work. The Harvard Classics, Vol. 12 Plutarch's Lives is a translation by John Dryden and Arthur Hugh Clough.
